Big Sur Exhibit

While the symposium takes place in Pacific Grove, don’t miss a powerful visual counterpart just down the road at the Monterey Museum of Art.

Curated by Magnus Toren, Director of the Henry Miller Memorial Library, the exhibit “Henry Miller’s Garden of Earthly Delights” draws from personal artifacts, letters, photographs, and artworks to offer a rich and revealing portrait of Miller’s inner world—erotic, ecstatic, philosophical, and deeply human.

A rare opportunity to see Miller’s multifaceted genius on display in a museum setting.

Smile at the foot of the ladder play

During the symposium, The Henry Miller Library is proud to premiere a daring new adaptation of Henry Miller’s parable about the clown Auguste, who longs to give his audience more than laughter—a glimpse of the divine.

Produced by Justine Stock (New Canon Theatre Co.), directed by Dennis Leroy Kangalee (Kangalee Arts Ensemble), and developed in collaboration with the Henry Miller Memorial Library, this bold theatrical production weaves movement, music, and design inspired by Fernand Léger’s circus imagery—a reflection of Miller’s postwar kinship with the artist. The premiere will be staged October 15, 2025, at the historic Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove and later at other venues.
