Around the time of our conference there are several events and options
During the month of October, the Museum of Art in Monterey will have an exhibit with items from Miller's time in Big Sur curated by HMML director Magnus Torén that will be part of a larger Big Sur exhibit.
Announcing a bold new theatrical production of The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder —Henry Miller's brilliant parable about a clown named Auguste, who longs to offer his audience more than laughter: a glimpse of lasting joy.
This project is a collaboration between producer Justine Stock (New Canon Theatre Co.), director-actor Dennis Leroy Kangalee (Kangalee Arts Ensemble) and the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur. Together, they'll bring Miller's fable to life through a blend of movement, music, and design inspired by the great cubist painter Fernand Léger, whose post-World War II friendship with Miller reflected their shared fascination with the circus and the human spirit. Though both lived in 1930s Paris, it was after the war that their creative kinship blossomed - Léger's circus and clown drawings were the original inspiration for Henry Miller's The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder. This premiere will be staged October 15, 2025, at the historic Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove and later at other venues.
